The vineyards of central-eastern Italy that slope down to the Adriatic are dominated by the black grape Montepulciano, particularly in Abruzzo. Heading north, the neighbouring region of the Marche shows this fulsome, thick-skinned variety at its best in the appellations of Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno. The Marche’s pride and joy, however, is its white wine Verdicchio which has been produced in the hills behind Ancona since Roman times and can claim to be one of Italy’s finest native white grapes. We will taste some of the top expressions and a raft of other local wines, before moving north to enjoy a few of the top new wines from producers south of the Via Emilia in the foothills of the Apennines.
